Architecture of Curonian Spit pinelands
The Curonian Spit's greatest assets are sand, sea, wind, forest, and people. During the tour, through the eyes of the forester Gražina Banienė  the pinelands and mountain pine forests are explored. The woodlands of the Spit are heavily influenced by human activity, as more than 90% of the pine forests are planted. Along the walk, the messages left more than a century ago by the planters of the Curonian Spit pinelands will be read and forest structure analyzed.

Life cycle of a trees in
human lifetime 

Forest specialist Gražina Baninenė shares knowledge and expertise from seed growing to taking care of snags in parallel to human growth. Pointing out the intersection of human everyday actions and tree lifespan. The route takes visitors through various pine tree life cycles; mountain pine seedlings planted this spring and upland pine woodland planted 120 years ago.

Nida - a settlement located in the amphitheater of Parnidis, Urbas and Angys dunes

During the tour Gražina Žemaitienė focuses on Nida, the settlement located in the amphitheater of Parnidis, Urbas and Angių dunes while discussing the Curonian Spit and the questions surrounding its existence today. Žemaitienė answers question: what draws people here - the forest, dunes, sea or the settlements and a different way of living compared to mainland Lithuania.

Greenkeepers of Nida dunes

In the Curonian Spit, the dunes were forested to tame the desertification. This is a product of the hard labour and dedication of people. The Nida Greenkeepers' old cemetery is separate from the other burial grounds. During the tour, Gražina Žemaitienė answers the questions. Who were the planters of dunes in Nida and why are their tombs located separately from the rest of Nida's inhabitants? Where did they lived? What does Urbo hill represent today and what was its significance in the past?

During the tour G. Žemaitienė discusses the stories and myths behind the Parnidis dune, why it still exists as a sand dune and hasn’t been planted as the rest of the dunes. Whether we really improve the landscape with outdoor sculptures, and the five hills settlement.

Neringa small-scale architecture: benches

The public spaces tour presents different ways in wich small-scale architecture shapes us, our habits, movement trajectories, and landscapes. Small architectural elements fill our daily lives with forms, building social and spatial relationships. Anton Šramkov focuses on these aspects as he leads the tour along the pathways with benches.

Hike to Giedružė Dune

 

Forester Gediminas Virginijus Dikšas leads the group to the top of Giedružė dune, which is hardly reached by touristic paths. On the way G.V. Dikšas shares more than 50 years of experience in working with ancient forest and coppice of young trees that group passes.

Hike to Bulvikis Cape

 

The tour route passes Purvynė village, Purvynės bay, Nida’s airport, Bulvikis cape and reaches Bulvikis camping ground. On the way, long-time forester Gediminas Dikšas tells a history and maintenance works that took place in Purvynė, airport area and how reeds were planted to protect the dune from washing away.
