The Secret Book of Lichens

Written by Kristupas Sabolius, illustrated by Aistė Ambrazevičiūtė.

The book is a walk through the mind and imagination of lichens spread across the forest. The short stories tell of lichen love, their mathematics, values and other important things. These compound creatures are never alone and know great ways to make friends. Perhaps that's why, when looking at lichens, people understood what symbiosis is - knowing how to live together. Composed of allied fungus and algae, these creatures have special powers - for example, they can easily survive in space and melt rocks. And this one, particularly special lichen, Graphis scripta, was even called the script of the forest.

Dr. Kristupas Sabolius, based in Vilnius, is a writer and an associate professor of philosophy at Vilnius University. He published ‘Furious Sleep. Imagination and Phenomenology’, a study which signalizes the contradictory function of imagination, appearing in all the major theories of Western thought, followed by ‘The Imaginary’, a book on imagination, technology, virtuality, cinema and art. He teaches courses on contemporary philosophy of art and theories of imagination, co-curated a few shows (at CAC, Vilnius, and Arte Boccanera Contemporanea, Trento, Italy). Sabolius wrote a novel “Bad Book”, a few theatre plays, initiated several cultural projects and hosted a TV show on Lithuanian and European Theatre, as well as co-wrote the script for “The Gambler”.

The children's books are designed by Goda Budvytytė and printed in separate editions in two languages - Lithuanian and English. Lithuanian language editing and translation into English was done by Alexandra Bondarev, English editing by Gemma Lloyd.
