Museum at the Venice Biennale 2015

A new version of a project "Museum" by Dainius Liškevičius will represent Lithuania in the Venice Biennale 2015. The project will be organised by Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts team (dr. Vytautas Michelkevičius, Rasa Antanavičiūtė and Daina Pupkevičiūtė) and supported by The Lithuanian Council for Culture.
"Museum" is a continuous artistic research project, composed of artworks and ideas, collection of soviet artefacts and contemporary culture. Dainius Liškevičius interprets the quite recent collective history of Soviet era and presents it from the standpoint of a fictitious artist, although including autobiographical traits.
Through his personalized and intriguing narrative about revolutionary personalities of the 1960-1980, the artist discloses a complex political, social and cultural history of Lithuania.
According to the curator of the project, dr. Vytautas Michelkevičius, in the framework of Venice Biennale, as well as in the context of Venice as a city-museum itself and in the neighbourhood of museum-like National pavilions "Museum" will be a relevant work. "The project by D.Liškevičius, as a cosmopolitical museum of art and protest of a small country, as a reflection of the History through the microhistory of an artist, will enable a dialogue with the past of the Biennale. <...> in a playful way the "Museum" will question patriotism, cultural isolation and the pursuit of Western values in the Soviet Lithuania."
The project was first presented in the National Art Gallery and Contemporary Art Centre in 2012, Vilnius; its subsequent versions were exhibited in Leipzig Museum of Contemporary Art in 2013 and Center PasquArt (Biel) in Switzerland in 2014.
