Limitations and constraints may seem restrictive at first glance, but they often hold great creative potential. When possibilities narrow, attention sharpens, and new solutions emerge. The artistic space becomes more focused, and materials, methods, and concepts are seen in a new light. Constraints – whether self-imposed or shaped by external conditions – can act as catalysts that lead to unexpected directions and new expressions.

At first, Mette Sandfær experienced it as a major limitation to work only with branches. But gradually, the material revealed its potential. Each branch had its own character, and it became a particular delight for her to discover one with an unusual shape. Combined with other found materials from the wood workshop, the possibilities expanded further, and the work took new directions.

The location played a key role in Mette Sandfær’s process. Being surrounded by forest and water created a sense of calm and focus that shaped both rhythm and approach. Direct contact with nature and materials made the work physical and sensory. Collecting materials from the surrounding forest gave the works a clear connection to this landscape and moment.
