Focusing her research on ecology and crafting, Marika Vandekraats is spending her time in Nida tying fishing-flies. The flies, being built from a combination of hairs, feathers, plastics, and found materials gathered along the coast, are wound tightly around the shaft of a hook in order to mimic a bug when casted into water. In order for one to successfully tie a fly, one must be aware of the conditions of water, the seasons, the sounds, the surrounds, and the life stages of insects, to carefully craft a convincing mimicry. Taking this trickery into consideration while crafting, Vandekraats has been exploring the relation between mimicry and adaptability in the animal world as it pertains to anthropocentric changes that have shifted habitats for all.
Vandekraats’s open studio will share these thoughts along with some works in progress, including a weaving made on Studio 2’s most beautiful loom. Please join for some tea, snacks, and fish talk.
Organised by Marika Vandekraats as part of her NAC artist residency.
