Marking the halfway point of her residency at NAC, Jo Lathwood warmly invites you to an Open Studio event. This is an opportunity to explore her latest works in progress, developed over the past month.
As part of the event, Lathwood will present a short reading of her essay, ‘Material as Labour. Labour as Value’, published in Yellowfields. The text reflects on the labour-intensive process of creating Tetrapods, a sculptural work commissioned by Thelma Hulbert Gallery in 2019. Inspired by the fragile relationship between sea defences and Devon’s eroding Jurassic Coast — a connection that resonates with Nida’s shifting dunes — Tetrapods explores the balance between sustainability, permanence, and place.
The essay also introduces Lathwood’s ‘Manifesto for Making Sustainable Artwork’, a guiding principle she continues to embrace in her current practice.
This event is organised by Jo Lathwood as part of her NAC artist residency, generously supported by Arts Council England.
