“At times when there wasn’t enough work on the fishing nets, we went into the forest to plant trees.” — Bronė Partikienė, 2024. Partikienė worked at the women-only fishing net factory in Juodkrantė during the Soviet occupation.
To what extent has (female) manual and often anonymous labour shaped the regional identity and anthropogenic landscape of the Curonian Spit? What traces of these hands-on practices remain visible today, and what insights might they reveal to us?
This workshop is designed as a spontaneous community action, where everyone is welcome to engage with the collaborative practice of net-making – a tradition that has lost its economic significance and cultural meaning due to the region’s shift toward tourism. You are welcome to bring any discarded thread-like materials from home.
During her stay at NAC, Justina Moncevičiūtė focused her research on the landscape and multi-layered history of the Neringa region through a tactile and textile approach.
Organised by Justina Moncevičiūtė as part of her NAC artist residency.
