Nida Art Colony starts producing small objects and souvenirs made by Vilnius Academy of Art students and graduates. The first item to sell is a reflector strip for cyclists and passengers. On one side you have a bicycle route of Curonian Spit (Neringa) with sightseeing objects and distances, on the other side you have explanations about the objects. You can get it in Nida Art Colony or Nida Tourism and Information Centre Agila for 6-8 LTL. The concept of this item together with more objects has won Lithuanian Young Designer Prize 2011. Concept and Design by Laima Griciūtė.

Contemporary Past: tracking a postcard

The third intensive summer course Contemporary Past will concentrate on the issue of message transfer in visual arts: How does a piece of art communicate with the viewer? What codes, strategies or methods are used in this communication? Does it matter what the artist wants to say and what the viewer gets? What happens to a coded message while it travels from the artist’s head to that of the viewer? Is it possible to materialize the process of thought through visual signs? Should one avoid or make use of the volatility of meaning and subjective truth? How close can means of visual communication get to those of a language? How to challenge the viewer’s habits of reading visual messages?
The main subject of the course refers to the location of the IP: Nida Art Colony is on the Curonian Spit, which served as a shortcut of the 19th century mail road connecting Koenigsberg and Riga (or Paris, Warsaw and St. Petersburg on the bigger scale). The course links communication by post to communication by visual representation and suggests the participants to reflect on travelling, be it a message travelling from a sender to a receiver, an idea, an object or a person.
Contemporary Past seeks to offer different approaches to the chosen subject: participants will have an opportunity to deepen their knowledge in visual semiotics, to discuss selected art works with their creators, to get to know the history of the old mail route, to watch relevant documentaries and fiction.
Five advanced students and a tutor from each partner school can attend the course. It is conducted by 4 tutors from partner schools and four guest speakers (artists and art researchers, who present their personal strategies and insight into communication by means of visual representation).
Contemporary Past consists of theoretical lectures, discussions, workshops, guided field trips and independent research. The first week is devoted to lectures discussions and field trips; the second – to individual research and workshops. Public review and discussion of created works will take place on the final weekend. All student participants are awarded 5 ECTS credits.
The project is fully funded by the LLP/Erasmus Programme.

Nida Art Colony: Call for Winter-Spring Residency Applications and Trainee
Nida Art Colony invites artists, designers, architects, curators, and art researchers to experience the Winter and Spring on the Baltic Sea coast in the Curonian Spit National Park (Lithuania).
CALL FOR RESIDENCY APPLICATIONS: BALTIC-NORDIC RESIDENCIES OCTOBER-DECEMBER 2012 AND INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCIES JANUARY-MAY 2013
Nida Art Colony or NAC welcomes proposals for its upcoming winter residencies. Two types of residencies are available. Residencies with grants will be offered to Baltic and Nordic artists for the term of October to December, 2012. The January to May, 2013, term is open to all applicants.
The NAC is located in a remote and beautiful landscape. The residency is appropriate for those artists seeking time, solitude and big studio or open-air space as well as for those who love coincidences and want to meet artists from all over the world in order to collaborate with them now or in the future. The Colony building also hosts student workshops and international artistic projects for shorter periods of time. The NAC is located in the small resort town of Nida.
The Colony provides the necessary living and social conditions to ensure a comfortable environment for the five artists-in-residence. Each of the five residencies is set out on two floors with 65 sq. m of floor space and features all the necessary facilities. The colony is situated about 600 meters away from the sand dunes, and a short walk from the beach. For a list of available equipment, see www.nidacolony.lt

Applications for Baltic-Nordic Grants for Residencies in October - December 2012: Follow application guidelines at http://www.nidacolony.lt/en/residence/application. Please, indicate "Baltic-Nordic Grant Application" in the subject line. Only the residents of Baltic-Nordic countries (except Lithuania) are eligible. There are 3 grants for artists and 1 for curator/researcher who is willing to spend 20-30% of his/her residency time co-curating/reseraching residency and colony programme.
Duration: 2 months.

We are looking for an intern to work as an assistant curator, which includes coordination of artist-in-residency and other culture & education programmes. You will also have to assist in daily tasks. We offer a unique experience and reference letters for your future career, as well as free accommodation at the Colony from September 2012 to May 2013.
