‘Nat listened to the tearing sound of splintering wood, and wondered how many million years of memory were stored in those little brains, behind the stabbing beaks, the piercing eyes, now giving them this instinct to destroy mankind with all the deft precision of machines.’
―Daphne du Maurier, The Birds
Midway through her residency, Marit Westerhuis invites you into the chaos of her research into nature-revenge narratives. How do we give form to slow-moving disasters – anonymous, attritional, and ignored by a sensation-driven world? How do we transform the long emergencies of slow violence into stories that stir action and demand change?
This open studio offers a glimpse into an ongoing exploration of fossil fuels, medieval witchcraft, and ecological revenge – where crows gather, toads explode, and CEOs reveal their secrets.
Come for the curiosity, stay for the conversation (and a drink).
Organised by Marit Westerhuis as part of her NAC artist residency.
Marit Westerhuis’ residency is supported by the Mondriaan Fund.
