Nicky Coutts

Nicky Coutts is an artist, writer and Research Lead in the School of Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA). At GSA she co-convenes, with Professor Henry Rogers, the Research Network ‘Queer Materialities;’ an inclusive practice-led research initiative that recently published ‘Queereal Secretions: Artistic Research as Exquisite practice’ (Article press, 2023).

Her work focuses on the pressures that humans place on species diversity and the environment, and the role of cross-species interactions in finding a way to better interact and live. Through a writing and multi-disciplinary visual practice, she explores how ‘language’ is often used to sustain the status quo and the potential for this to be shifted through working closely with ‘oddkin’ (Haraway).

She was a visiting researcher at the Center for Art Design and Social Research, Italy (2022) presenting on ‘Interspecies Drawing’ in a symposium titled ‘Unwriting Nature’. At the Photography: Metamorphosis and New Ecologies symposium with the Hasselblad Foundation (also 2022), she presented on mimicry and reenactment across species.

Nicky is a member of the Fiction Group, a collective exploring art fiction as a form of critical engagement. They published in FAYD Digital (2022) and were commissioned for Research Pavilion in 2023 with UniArts Helsinki, leading to a collective work shown in HIAP. Nicky will be publishing in 2HB, Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow and in PARSE (Fabulations) Sweden (both 2025) with a solo show at Danielle Arnaud Contemporary Art, London in 2026.
