Project Information
Techno-Ecologies aims to re-approach cultural, social and ecological sustainability through artistic explorations and cultural innovation.
In response to the current situation of economical, climate, social and cultural crisis, the project is aimed at developing viable solutions, while building a trans-European collaboration platform - supporting artistic and creative explorations towards sustainable future development.
Beyond questions of finite resources and obvious forms of pollution and environmental degradation, Techno-ecologies attempts to develop sustainable relationships with technology and our living environment should take into account far more complex layerings of the way we inhabit our current technological ecologies. Such a deeply informed ethical and philosophical perspective is indispensable if we hope to find less hazardous routes into the future.
Techno-Ecologies builds upon the concerns of Felix Guattari about the lack of an integrated perspective on the dramatic techno-scientific transformations the Earth has undergone in recent times. Guattari urges to take three crucially important 'ecological registers' into account -the environment, social relations, and human subjectivity.
The project’s activities are divided into four sections: 1) Workshop Series and Artistic Explorations – facilitating space for theoretical research and practical (artistic) experimentation; 2) Open Labs – for communicating ideas and workshop results to different audiences; 3) RENEW! Conference and Exhibition – facilitating venue for discussions, meetings and public presentations; and 4) Publicity Activity – for disseminating results for wider audience.
The project is designed and implemented by cultural organizations: RIXC (Latvia), Baltan Laboratories (The Netherlands), Napon (Serbia), Ars Longa (France) and Finnish BioArt Society (Finland) together with institutional partners: Finnish Academy of Fine Arts (Finland), Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Arts Academy (Lithuania), MPLab (Art Research Lab) of Liepaja University (Latvia), and in collaboration with their associated partners: Van Abbemuseum (The Netherlands), Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina in Novi Sad (Serbia), Pixelache / Pixelversity (Finland), Serde (Latvia) and Chant des Possibles (France).
Nida Art Colony (NAC) provides residency opportunities for artists, researchers and other actors interested in working on relevant issues. In Nida’s case, the focus is on site-specific approaches that advance local, environmental sustainability. Two residency periods for up to four people at a time will be provided between 2013 and 2014.
