ON HOSTING AND DISPLACING: ARTISTIC RESIDENCIES AND CULTURAL PRODUCTION IN REMOTE CONTEXTS

On Hosting and Displacing will share experiences between two institutions, -Nida Art Colony and Fondation Chateau Mercier (FCM) et Ecole Cantonale d’Art du Valais (ECAV) à Sierre. Both are located in remote areas and explore alternative models of cultural production, based on a combination of artistic residencies, active exhibition centres and artistic educational programs.
Focusing on the specificity of remote, picturesque contexts dominated by landscapes (both rural or alpine/marine) that are being “regenerated” today through touristic and cultural policies, the project will question critical models for artistic intervention in such environments. The projects themes will be approached both intensively (artistic residencies, knowledge exchange symposium and workshop-based exhibitions) and extensively (long research periods carried out during art and research residencies).
A temporary, itinerant colony of art and cultural producers will circulate and exchange between Nida and Sierre between 2012 and 2013. The project will be documented by a publication.

Led by NAC/VDA and ECAV /FCM, two university-level art institutions, the project will also associate five partners in Lithuania and Switzerland:
- Fondation Château Mercier, Sierre - Switzerland (artistic residency program).
- Forum Wallis, Schloss Leuk – Switzerland
- Mountain Radio, Verbier
- NGO Neringa FM (local radio station in Nida) – Lithuania.
- National Park of Curonian Spit (UNESCO) – Lithuania.
- Neringa Municipality– Lithuania.
SEVERAL CALL OUTS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROJECT -
Two month residency for Swiss artists (April-May 2013 period) with participation in Inter-format Symposium.
Two month thematic residency for Swiss/Nordic-Baltic artists (March - December 2013) on the subject of Critical-Tourism. Intended for artists who want to develop a site-specific work relating to Nida and its touristic aspects.
Grants: There are two grants available, of 700 EUR/month, travel (up to 350 EUR), studio, accommodation and production costs.
Thematic residencies are supported by the EU Culture Programme, Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture and Vilnius Academy of Arts.

Curator Biographies
Federica Martini, PhD, is an art historian and curator. She was a member of the Curatorial Departments of the Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Rivoli-Turin, Musée Jenisch Vevey and Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts/Lausanne, and curator of the visual art section of the Festival des Urbaines, Lausanne. Since 2009 she is head of the Master program MAPS - Arts in Public Spheres at ECAV, Ecole Cantonale d’Art du Valais, Sierre.
Vytautas Michelkevičius (LT, Vilnius/Nida) is a theorist, activist, and curator, working with art and media projects and interested in socializing through art, interdisciplinarity between art and research, experimental teaching, and participatory curatorial practices. He holds PhD in Communication & Media studies, lectures in Vilnius Academy of Arts since 2005 and works as artistic director of Nida Art Colony (www.nidacolony.lt) since 2010. He curated several exhibitions (from small to big scale) and edited numerous books, among them Mapping Lithuanian Photography: Histories and Archives - Photo/carto/historio/graphies (MENE, 2007), In)dependent Contemporary Art Histories: Artist-run Initiatives in Lithuania 1987-2011 (LTMKS, 2011), Generation of the Place: Image,Memory and Fiction in the Baltics (MENE, 2011) catalogues as well as internet journal on media culture Balsas.cc (2005-2009).
Petra Koehle has studied photography, theory and fine art at the Zurich University of the Arts and at Central Saint Martins University of the Arts London. Since 2003 she works collaboratively with Nicolas Vermot Petit-Outhenin. Collaborations with other people as well as organizing exhibitions, discussions and performances are consistently part of their work and a strategy to intervene cultural politics. Koehle is currently working on a Phd at the University of the Art in Linz and works as guest lecturer at Berne University of the Arts and as assistant a Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Valais.
