Joanna Kalm
Joanna Kalm works largely within practices of embodiment and more specifically with somatic movement, which centres people’s self-awareness, self-sensing and self-agency. The more prominent thematic thread in her work is the negotiation of agency: what is and can be considered enminded and capable of self-action. In examining discussions about consciousness and ‘the mind’, she is interested in de-centering the discursive understandings from nervous system agency and the application of ‘willpower’ towards the whole organism as a bundle of mindful matter – one of many ‘minds’.
Kalm lives the many lineages of street and contemporary dance, as well as contemporary performance making. Currently, she considers embodiment practice as her primary departure point for artistic research, allowing interests and relevant themes to arise from experiencing the bodily matter. She also holds a Master’s degree in cultural anthropology and is an avid reader of philosophy.
