The residency of Juozas Laivys, from March till April 2013 at Villa Ruffieux, Fondation Château Mercier, is part of a longterm exchange program on hosting and displacing between Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Valais and Vilnius Academy of the Arts. The program includes different formats such as artist residencies, workshops, exhibitions and a symposium which is taking place in May 2013 at Nida Art Colony, a new subdivision of the Vilnius Academy of the Arts. The transdisciplinary project aims to bring into question correspondences between artistic practices and critical tourism.
During his residency in Sierre Juozas Laivys continued his previous work on mobile polyester sculptures. Based on a small wooden figurine, that he had brought from Lithuania, he created a ten times bigger, human size statue, which in color and shape is almost identical to its model.
Together with Juozas Laivys the sculpture started to visit the world around it and created relations to the public space and the passersby. “The sculpture has a life on its own which is independent from the artist”, claims Juozas Laivys and reminds us of an other little red figurine which after its creation began to discover the world. With great lightness he analyses the agency of sculptures in public space today.
