Mari-Leen Kiipli (EE) (b. 1988) studied Semiotics and Culture Theory (BA) at the University of Tartu and Photography (MA) at the Estonian Academy of Arts.

Artist combines photography, video, and installation. She focuses on the cognitive qualities of spaces and situations. In her works, she closely observes her presence in specific environments and the functioning of the body’s memory. In her videos, Mari-Leen perceives ways of standing between light and shadow, uncertainty and suspense. She explores blurred existential encounters between different forms of life and grasps the subject in the flow of relations with multiple others.

During the residency, Mari-Leen will continue to work with the subject of nature documentary as in the previous works. She is planning to build temporary installation sets in the surroundings of Nida and film while using performative actions for the camera.

Joana Castro (PT) (b. 1988) and Maurícia Barreira Neves (PT) (b. 1989) are the artist duo focusing on dance and performance.

For the first collaboration together, the artists will question the boundaries between private and public. They are interested in exploring queer bodies that defy the norms and find new ways of being and how two bodies move in each other and with each other, creating different relationships between them and the surrounding space.

At the residency, Mauricia and Joana are planning to work on a performance piece and STILL we MOVE. The artists are calling it the manifest of love. This artwork comes from the desire to move two bodies in permanent contact, from the private to the public sphere, to question and reconfigure the relationship between the two poles.

Emilija Škarnulytė (b. 1987) (LT) studied sculpture (BA) at Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Italy and Fine Art (MA) in Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art in Norway.

The artist’s work consists of a series of politically active visions, in which she investigates reality with a political and poetic approach. Emilija explores questions of the beginning of the universe in relation to deep time, invisible architecture and larger systems of power. Her films look into a relation between art and science, storytelling, truth and poetics of language created by science.

Emilija will continue the project she started during the residency at Nida art colony in March 2019. Artist will work on a film production in collaboration with marine scientists. She is interested in resources’ extraction conditions in the circumpolar areas of the North. One of them is deep sea mining. The artist will reconstruct the mythologies and beliefs of the past by looking underwater to the Ocean Basin from future alien archeology perspective - when humans will be alreadyextinct and the landscape will be seen as a body carved with the human left artifacts of impressive architecture of oil rigs and mines. Combining research material, landscape shots and archival footage, she will reflect over the changing image of the North, as a site where violence, desire, greed, and emotions are played out.

Johanna Bruckner (AT) (b. 1984) studied Fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg, Germany, Social Anthropology at the University of Vienna, and Cultural and Critical Studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria.

Johanna is interested in the conditions of dissolved labour that have been emerging in response to the technologies of communicative capitalism. She is often working with social and political references that emerge within the ruptures and struggles of our realities. Dancers and performers are significant in her work, films and video installations.

During the residency at Nida Art Colony Johanna will research on how recent conceptions on the molecularization of the world and our bodies may crystallize in a redistribution of the sensible. The artist work is an attempt to question the paradoxes and new potentialities of social cohesion in the dissolution of the human agency today.
