| In the beginning of May 2016, four artists joined Nida Art Colony: Juhan Vihterpal (EE), Kristin Orav (EE), Austėja Dūdaitė (LT) and Karolis Tamošiūnas (LT). |
| Juhan Vihterpal (b. 1984) is an Estonian composer, a multi-instrumentalist, a film sound designer and a painter who combines different mediums in his practice, e.g. electronic paintings. He has studied electroacoustic composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre in 2003-2007 and graduated from the University of Tartu in painting in 2012. His main intrest lies in creating complex sound structures by digital modification of acoustic data. This method rips audio recordings out of their original context and opens his outcome to new meanings and conceptualization. Focus on experimentalism is best reflected in his activity in a number of improvisational bands and collectives, for example Trans Germanium Express and the art group LAIK. His sound solutions have designed Raul Meel´s, Flo Kasearu´s and Laura Põld´s exhibitions. |

Kristin Orav (Kristino Rav, b. 1987) is a performance artist and an academician. She has graduated from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2009 and from the University of Tartu in 2011. Her interests and background lies in fine arts, semiotics and cultural studies from where she draws her creative perspective and language, exploring physical and mental endurance in site and context-specific settings. Joint projects form a focal point in her portfolio as she tends to collaborate frequently. She has been working together with various artists/thinkers – Piret Karro, Juha Hilpas, Gabriella Hirst and Raul Taremaa, also belonging to the interdisciplinary art collective LAIK. Selection and participation in different art residencies have been crucial for developing her practice as well as shaping her world view in general, for instance the artists´ village residency Sowing Seeds in India (2011), residency program of The National University of Bogota in Colombia (2012), ZK/U Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik in Berlin (2013–2014). On a local scale, she has co-curated two seasons of Semiosalong´s public seminars on visual and cultural semiotics dedicated to the concept/method of ERROR and participant observation in 2014–2015. During a month-long residency period at the Nida Art Colony, Kristin Orav and Juhan Vihterpal wish to seek for ways how to uselocal landscape as a creative tool in describing one´s relation to its self, following their mutual interest in experimenting with new audio recordings and location-specific findings. |
| Karolis Tamošiūnas is a particle physicist with a PhD from Bergen University (Norway). Working with CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, he has done internships at the University of Florence – INFN, University of Cape Town, Goethe University Frankfurt, and other schools around the world. The main idea of his project is to visualize and sonify the cosmic rays which reach us every instant, but remain undetected by our senses. The first part of the project will result in a video installation that will enable the viewers to directly see the cosmic particles with the help of detectors; the second part will involve cosmic particles “playing live”.
Austėja Dūdaitė is a young artist interested in the connection between the universal laws of nature and art. The unchanging stream of cosmic particles as a consistent pattern, as well as each particle’s ephemeral nature and individual “death” create the axis of the installation – the opposition between our temporary and the eternal worlds. Intergalactic particles will be sinking in the meaninglessness of words like drops into the river, like rain into the ocean. |
