The exhibition of Justyna Kabala, resident at Nida A-I-R, 'Collage Pleasures' opens on the 29th of May at 6 pm at the si:said gallery in Klaipėda. The exhibition will be opened till the 28th of June.

Justyna Kabala will present installations, photographs, and collages created, most of all, during her residency at the Nida Art Colony.

Artist about the upcomming exhibition: ‘Collage pleasures’ is a project of an individual journey into the wood, sea and imagination. I play with collage elements placing them in different carefully chosen locations. During my residency I explored the possibilities of arranging elements in tree dimensional collage situations, where nature also became a part of a collage. I work in a studio and at creative walks during which I am collecting places and making a diary-sketchbook. Form, color, composition are very important to me so I pay close attention to my surroundings and always try to arrange the elements thoroughly. I consider art as a natural extension of my daily activities.

By creating painting objects and collages I would like to refer to 'liquid modernity' (late modernity), the term introduced by the Polish-British postmodern sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, used as a main descriptive category of modernity. My objects loose the safety of a background and become mobile. Nomadism becomes a general trait of the 'liquid modern' man as he/ she flows through his/ her own life like a tourist, changing places, jobs.

What often appears to be of most interest to me are backgrounds, fragments of textiles and textures of objects. Having undergone deconstruction, they make space for constructing new metaphors and narrations. The act of cutting becomes a gesture to creating new ruins, fragments of tired imagination, wanting to find something new in constant searching.

I think, through collage, the opposites have a chance to meet and establish new relations. Exploring collages could influence new ways of thinking about different techniques. Deconstruction helps to find new senses, meanings, it encourages mixing, experimenting. Deconstruction is a challenge for construction. I would like to emphasize collage’s role in interdisciplinary and cross-media approach in creating art.'
