Nida Art Colony is starting to expand!

A building company (or rather a demolishing one so far) arrived to the Colony premises last week. They are now deconstructing the shed bit by bit. This is actually the start of the reconstruction of the second block of the Colony building. The works should last until the end of summer 2015. The reconstruction is funded by the EU Structural Funds.

When we finish we have a brand new multi-purpose 200 sq. m space, a 100 sq. m workshop, and a light and spacious lobby for social activities and hanging out on the ground floor; a 150 sq. m conference room, a huge reading room (with a view to the lighthouse!), another 70 sq. m workshop, a meeting room, a dark room for analogue photography, and seven double bed rooms on the first floor, and the second roof terrace (connected by a small bridge to the first one). Please, have a look at the architectural drawings (in Lithuanian) if you are curious. All this will enable us to start a new continuous educational programme – preliminary called Nida Doctoral School – which we are planning together with Aalto University. The school (or Nida Institute for Doctorates in Art) will offer intensive courses and residencies to doctoral students in art and art history from a cluster of European art universities, which we are forming right now.
We hope that construction works next door will not scare our visitors and look forward to more comfortable and more diverse Colony in a year and a half. We will keep posting pictures of the reconstruction process, you can start planning your events in the expanded Nida Art Colony in 2015.
