Several things and "Several things"

Although the website hasn't seen any updates lately, Nida Art Colony is in constant action. The last of this years' student practices are taking place here until the end of the week, and with the end of those, our off-season will start.

During the time we didn't update you as to residents in the colony, Renja Leino, Jonas Jurcikas, Hannah Öllinger and Manfred Rainer have worked here and have already left our silent land of moose and mushrooms.

Meanwhile far out in the Alps a couple of Lithuanian artists - Arunas Gudaitis and Laura Stasiulyte - are in residency in in the framework of collaborative project between Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Vallais and Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts "On Hosting and Displacing: Artistic Residencies and Cultural Production in Remote Contexts". This transdisciplinary project aims to bring into question correspondences between artistic practices and critical tourism. The project is realized with support of Pro Helvetia Warsaw.

Here's an invitation you could use if you're in those parts of Switzerland:

Arunas Gudaitis and Laura Stasiulyte
One day event. Works and Processes

The event takes place at Avenu Max Huber 12, Sierre
October 3 at 6pm
The evening will be accompanied by a presentation of works by the artists.

In her new art project “[In “Letters”]” Laura Stasiulyte investigates the phenomenon of mental fatigue, distress or weariness. As mentioned in literature, in biographies of artists and intellectuals and in diaries from the second half of the 20th century, periodical visits to pensions, hotels and sanatoriums was common practice to restore health. Laura Stasulyte's research explores Switzerland's history as a place to recover from such ailments.

Arunas Gudaitis has continued to research his ongoing project “Pieces and parts”, which is based on the sculptural heritage of Western culture. This project explores the cultural artwork of migration between the original, the copy and the fragment, etc., and the way that these shifts can precondition new interpretations and reconstructions. Some of the key themes in Gudaitis' work include art treasures, collectables and exchange phenomenons.

The residency of Laura Stasiulyte and Arunas Gudaitis at Villa Ruffieux, Fondation Château Mercier is part of a long-term exchange program on the subject of hosting and displacing between Ecole Cantonale d'Art du Valais, the Nida Art Colony and Vilnius Academy of the Arts. The program includes different formats such as artist residencies, workshops, exhibitions in Nida and Sierre, and a symposium in  Nida. This transdisciplinary project aims to bring into question correspondences between artistic practices and critical tourism. The project is realized with the generous support of Pro Helvetia Warsaw.

Arunas Gudaitis (1973) lives and works in Vilnius. He received an MA in Visual Arts from Vilnius Art Academy in 2001, organized solo exhibitions in Kunstraum Aarau, Display gallery, Prague and CAC, Vilnius. He also participated in Faster than history, KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki); Unbalanced allocation of space, Museum of Contemporary Art (GfZK, Leipzig); Political/Poetical Tallinn Art Hall (Tallinn), Ex-voto: dans l’art contemporain, Palais du Tau, (Reims, France) and Urban Stories, The X Baltic Triennial of International Art (CAC, Vilnius).

Laura Stasiulyte (1977) lives and works in Vilnius. She is an artist whose work is primarily focused on the sociopolitical meanings of language, time and location. Issues of memory, as well as collisions of the past and the present are apparent in most of the artist’s works. Since 2000 Stasiulyte has exhibited her works in various exhibitions such as Manifesta 4th (Frankfurt/Main, Faster than history, KIASMA Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki), BMW, The IX Baltic Triennial of International Art (CAC, Vilnius), Progressive Nostalgia, Centro per l’arte contemporanea Luigi Pecci (Prato, Italy) and 54th International Short Film Festival Oberhausen.
