Nida Doctoral School. Documentary Practices: New Perspectives on Old Issues ongoing this week at NAC

This week the annual Nida Doctoral School (NDS) takes place at Nida Art Colony (NAC) of Vilnius Academy of Arts. The non-degree doctoral program at NAC was established in 2012, when PhD researchers gathered in Nida for a shared summer course. In 2015, in collaboration with Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture Nida Doctoral School was founded to take place in its current form and is organised in partnership with the University of the Arts Helsinki, and the University of the Arts London since 2018.

The Nida Doctoral School (NDS) comprises an intensive one-week programme for DA and PhD candidates in visual and performing arts, design, architecture and spatial practices, media, as well as the humanities and social sciences. NDS is structured to provide opportunities for doctoral candidates to present, discuss, and share their individual research in a collegial setting with formal and informal discussions, group and individual consultations, and tutoring.

The common threads of the 2021 iteration of the course are documentary practices in use today. NDS aims to focus on research that reconsiders the conditions and purpose of documentary practices invested in politics, particularly those that contest existing narratives and consider the impact of recent technological, historical, and political developments and relations.

For each summer school NDS invites tutors to contribute in discussing the topic of the course and provide one on one consultations to the participants. This week artist and professor Deimantas Narkevičius (Vilnius Academy of Arts), architect and theorist Ines Weizman (Royal College of Arts, London), art and culture researcher Lina Michelkevičė (Vilnius Academy of Arts) as well as co-curators of Neringa Forest Architecture project at NAC, Jurga Daubaraitė and Jonas Žukauskas are on site in Nida. While educator and researcher Sarah Owens (Zurich University of the Arts) provides consultation sessions via online sessions. The curator and organiser of NDS 2021 is Egija Inzule, director of NAC of Vilnius Academy of Arts.

Tutors from partnering academies Joanne Morra, Mika Elo, Vytautas Michelkevičius and Sofia Pantouvaki offer individual tutoring consultations to the doctoral candidates in Nida as well as via online sessions. Drawn from across the art, architecture, and design sectors, they provide extensive experience of carrying out practice-led research and supporting doctoral students to do likewise.

Currently 13 students from seven different academies in Europe are participating in the course in Nida:

Anousheh Kehar (Vienna University of Technology)
Oana Nechifor (George Enescu National University of Arts, Bucharest)
