NAC Library Talks: On agriculture and art

28 October, 5 pm
NAC Library

During the talk both artists Gisèle Gonon, currently in residency at NAC and Laura Garbštienė, currently visiting NAC, will address their practices in relation to agriculture: working the land and working with animals. They will address questions of agricultural land as common good, food sovereignty and property.

They will look into land reforms that the regions of the former Soviet Union have experienced and how these have shaped the landscape and accentuated the disparities between the rural and the urban. They will also discuss other formats of land management, that act as alternatives to industrial agriculture as well as speak about the role agriculture takes within the arts.

Laura Garbštienė is artist and founder of the artist run initiative Verpėjos (The Spinners). Verpėjos researches and discusses rural traditional lifestyle and nature preservation, activate discourse on changes and processes, both local and global. They work with contemporary artists, curators, craftspeople and nature scientists and organise interdisciplinary workshops, symposiums and exhibitions.

Currently in residency at NAC, Gisèle Gonon lives and works in Berlin. In her practice Gonon dissects economic and social processes related directly to her own environment, in particular labour, agriculture, and territorial politics. Gonon is the co-founder of the CCPC collective [Collisions, Cataclysms and Construction Permits] and participated in the Goldrausch-Künstlerinnen Projekt. Her works were recently exhibited at Continuum in Bordeaux, Ostfriesland in Berlin, and Baumwollspinnerei in Leipzig (2019).

NAC urges all visitors to be mindful of the current protective measures against the spreading of Covid-19: we kindly ask you to wear appropriate face coverings and keep a safe distance from other participants.
