6 February 2020 at 18 h in Paviljonas (Pylimo g. 21B, Vilnius) presentation of the book Migrants and Refugees on the Curonian Spit: Resettlement in the Mid-20th Century by Prof Dr Vasilijus Safronovas will take place.

You are cordially invited to join us as the event will be attended by the author, the historian Dr Tomas Balkelis and the initiator of the book Dr Rasa Antanavičiūtė. Discussion moderator – cultural journalist Austėja Kuskienė.

Event will be held in Lithuanian. Limited amount of books will be available for free.

Author writes, "Since the times of the Prussian philosopher and naturalist Wilhelm von Humboldt, the Curonian Spit has been called a woodland paradise, the gem of the kingdom of dunes and a wonder of nature. For most authors, the spit was valuable primarily because of its beautiful landscape. But why do we call it 'Curonian'? Who were, and are, its inhabitants? We are invited here to reconsider the prevailing images, and see the peninsula as a place of constant migration, an area that was almost completely depopulated as a consequence of the Second World War, and the resettlement of which was exceptional in the postwar Lithuanian context."

Since July 2017 NAC has been involved as a partner in the project 4Cs: From Conflict to Conviviality Through Creativity and Culture, which is a cooperation project in the framework of the European Union's programme Creative Europe 2014-2020. The first project activity at Nida Art Colony was the research residency of Prof Dr Vasilijus Safronovas, researcher at the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology at Klaipėda University. The research aim was to study the patterns of emigration and immigration from and to the Curonian Spit after WWII. It culminated in an illustrated publication in Lithuanian and English Migrants and Refugees on the Curonian Spit.
