Egija Inzule

Egija Inzule’s curatorial practice spans exhibitions, research, education, publishing, institutional management, and long-term collaborations with artists developing new site-specific work. Questions of labour, value, institutional conditions recur in her work, and how infrastructures, ecologies, and systems of organisation are shaped by historical and geopolitical forces. Growing up during the post-Soviet transition in Latvia, her perspective is informed by how changing economic and political orders reorganise institutions and the conditions of cultural practice.

From 2019 to 2025, Inzule was Director of the Nida Art Colony of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (VAA NAC). Her work addressed the historical, geopolitical, and sociopolitical entanglements of the Curonian Spit through queer, decolonial, and politically activist practices. She developed new residency formats, including Neringa Forest Architecture, with timber becoming a material for shaping the institution and its relationship to its surroundings, alongside the establishment of a garden and new productions including Agnė Jokšė’s Unconditional Love and Eglė Budvytytė’s Songs from Compost, as well as the publication of Denis Diderot’s poem Voyage à Memel in Lithuanian. Historical research explored the Curonian Spit as a place formed through successive cultural and political projections, as discussed by Aya Soika in her work on Max Pechstein in Nida. Inzule also submitted a request to change the institution’s name, questioning the continued use of “colony” and pointing to the urgency of disrupting its nineteenth- and twentieth-century imperial connotations. Focusing on experimentation with educational formats, she organised five editions of the Nida Doctoral School alongside KUNO study courses, inviting guest curators and artists-in-residence as tutors, thus connecting the different facets of VAA NAC’s hybrid structure.

Previously, she worked within the teams of castillo/corrales, Paris; Istituto Svizzero di Roma; and co-directed Shedhalle, Zurich. Her independent projects include collaborations with Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art, and Midway Contemporary Art in Minneapolis. Her engagement with the artist Fred Lonidier began in 2010 with research into his archive and practice and developed into a long-term collaboration, including exhibitions presenting his work in Europe. She studied Art History at the University of Leipzig before completing BA and MA in Theory and Fine Arts at Zurich University of the Arts.

Egija Inzule is a member of Neringa Forest Architecture (NFA), formed with Jurga Daubaraitė and Jonas Žukauskas. The collective’s work spans art, architecture, spatial research, publishing and education. Its projects include art books for children and the Children’s Forest Pavilion for the Lithuanian Pavilion at La Biennale di Venezia (2023), and Les pièces de la forêt, an exhibition and playscape at arc en rêve, Bordeaux (2024). Since 2022, Inzule has been a tutor at the Dutch Art Institute, where NFA leads a collaborative Master of Fine Arts COOP.
