Nina Nowak, based in Berlin, is an artist and currently a doctoral candidate for a practice-based PhD at the Vilnius Academy of Art. Born in Poland and raised in Germany, Nowak studied at the Academies of Düsseldorf and Copenhagen, as well as at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Nowak is an alumna of the Jan Van Eyck Academy in the Netherlands and OPI- Lab in Stockholm. Her work draws on feminist and critical theory, material epistemologies, and mapping technologies. She uses hands-on methods and works closely with materials, moving from traditional techniques like stone carving to experimenting with 3D animation. In her work, she explores the intersection of space, time, and the perception of a material, examining how cultural frameworks shape our perception of matter. In her practice-based PhD, Nina Nowak examines the relationship between notions of spatiality and the life/non-life of lithic matter in the Baltic Sea region.
