During her residency at Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts, Slovak artist Maja Štefančíková developed the first version of a performative climate forecast. Prompted by weeks of drought jeopardising access to drinking water in Central Europe, she combined factual reports with her own writing to create paradoxical announcements: forecasts of the future composed from events that have already happened. The texts were set to the Roman Rite liturgy “Dies irae” and conceived for a group of performers, bringing the restrained language of climate data into contact with the emotional force of the song.

Maja is a visual artist, working mostly with performance and teacher whose temporary situations unfold through voice, movement and text. Her work explores encounters between humans, animals, plants, atmospheric phenomena and technologies, often leaving the audience to determine how these relationships develop.

Maja Štefančíková’s residency was supported by Culture Moves Europe, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Goethe-Institut. This work was produced with the financial assistance of the European Union. The views expressed herein can in no way be taken to reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
