Rancière and Imagination

Rancière’s account on imagination is not simple. He tends to discredit the role of imagination played in aesthetic regime, which primarily articulates the relationship between the sensuous and the rational and exercises the similar transitory function that Kant ascribed to the transcendental Einbildunskraft. However, even in Kant it appears to perform far more complex role than that of a faculty of subject. If one conceives the field of the imaginary as common space beyond the individual, as a trans-subjective power creating much more than a reproduction of reality, imagination reveals itself as a new form of montage, based not only on the unification of manifold, but also on disintegration or disruption. In this sense, through imagination, the new distribution of the sensible (partage du sensible) can be established.

Jacques Rancière’s politics of parataxis from the 1960s to the present

I shall start by reconstructing Rancière’s distinctive conception of equality and identifying some of the most salient features of his account of politics. I shall then review some of the decisive moves and moments in his ongoing exploration of ‘the aesthetic regime of art’. The talk will discuss his approach in one or two of the fourteen ‘scenes’ from his latest major work on art and aesthetics, Aisthesis: Scenes From the Aesthetic Regime of Art (Verso, 2013), in an effort to draw out and critique some of the distinctive features of that book’s project. Parataxis of various kinds will be the red thread through this material.

The Alterity of the Image

This talk will examine the otherness of the image in its application to photography. Otherness is considered in its relation to language, culture and meaning as ways in which alterity makes the image something impossible to 'complete' by any viewer or the producer of the image.

The Use/Abuse of Ranciére in the Collaborative Practice Debate

This presentation will look at one of the contemporary art contexts within which Ranciére’s work has been mobilised. It will primarily focus on the way Ranciére’s work is cited and deployed within the controversy between Grant Kester and Claire Bishop over collaborative art practice.

Emancipated (Art) Educator or Thinking Higher Arts Education with Jacques Rancière

During the recent years we (in Finland and Europe) have faced several reforms that have (had) a major impact on the education of artists. The ‘Bologna agreement’ in addition to several other reforms, such as university mergers aim at homogenising higher education and rationalising it in accord with the Anglo-American model, with clear and comparable outcomes. Even if this framework has challenged the educational traditions of higher arts education (e.g. the master-pupil or master-apprentice -model), the ‘outcomes trap’ of our current curriculums still define (quite strictly) what and how students should learn during their studies. In my talk I will think the possible ‘futures’ of higher arts education with Jacques Rancière. Through his notions of ‘ignorance’, ‘equality of intelligence’, ‘emancipation’, ‘blurring roles’ and ‘crossing boundaries’ (among others) we might transgress our current notions of learning and curriculum and be able to create spaces where learning could be experienced in more complex, complicated, and connected ways…in ways that would enable learning in an artful way.

Sound and image – relations between elements and functions

A functional aspect is one of the principle ones, when speaking about the interaction between music and image in theatre, film and other multimodal genres. In current cases music first of all is functional, not created merely for itself (refers to nothing) but serves another purpose and principally acts as a mediator (refers to another).  Glancing at this issue from thus aspect one can distinguish several different types of this interaction – from the pragmatic to the structural and semantic. The whole complex of relations between “elements” and “functions” compose a hexagonal sound-image model embracing cardinal analytical points of music, which is conditioned not only by a listening purpose but also applied one. 



The Geometry of the Gaze 

This is a talk which examines the possibilities of the trajectory of the gaze and the operation of the cognitive system. The presentation is structured as an artistic research map built on scientific research rather than a synthesis of various scientific data. The problem of the relationship between image and imagination, the development of semblance, language and social mythology is examined. It is expected that the futuristic idea of a social fractal, which gives a presumption for the collective mind hypothesis, can be relevant to artists.
