Call for residency exchange between NMK and MASS Alexandria

Nida Art Colony invites artists from Egypt to apply for a two-month-long residency in Nida, Lithuania, in the fall of 2018. Application dealine is the 15th of March 2018.  

1 September-31 October 2018: residency of an Egyptian artist in Nida 
1 October-30 November 2018: residency of 2 Lithuanian artists in Alexandria

The residency is part of a new collaboration between MASS Alexandria and the VAA Nida Art Colony, made possible by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Founding Director of MASS Alexandria Wael Shawky.

The residency is complementing the activities of the project 4Cs: From Conflict to Conviviality through Creativity and Culture. Participating artist are expected to focus on issues of conflict, rootless communities, migration, displacement, ways of making strange territories your own, conviviality, identity and related experiences. There are no limits on time or geographical area if the artist choses to work on specific historical events. Please refer to the description of the project  for further information.

ELIGIBILITY. NAC invites Egyptian visual artists to apply for this residency exchange as long as they are based in Egypt since at least two years, participated in local and international art activities during this time, for instance group shows, screening programmes, experimental exhibitions, conferences and talks within fine arts and experimental film. Fluent spoken and written English is a must. Open mindedness, tolerance and sociability would be wonderful.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT/GRANT. The artist selected for this residency will receive a grant, which covers the visa, airfare for his/her flight from Alexandria to Vilnius and back, the airport transfer to/from Nida, the health insurance in Lithuania, the honorarium of 700 Eur/month to cover his/her living expenses, and a production budget. In addition, NAC will provide a private living and studio space and organise a presentation of his/her work in Nida and/or Vilnius within the framework of the 4Cs project. Please note that NAC cannot provide the artist-in-residence with a production budget for large-scale formats (solo show etc.), but is committed to provide funds for the kind of work he/she develops while in residency.

APPLICATION & SELECTION. Selection is based on the quality of artistic practice. This is assessed on the basis of the following information:

artist statement and activity/project proposal while in residency presented in the application form (please download);


- portfolio with a minimum of ten examples of previous work.

Please write “LT residency application” on the envelope or in the subject line. We would prefer to receive all the documents in one file (PDF, DOC, etc.). The attachments must not exceed 10 MB.

Selection is organised in two steps: MASS Alexandria selects three finalists based on recommendations by an independent jury and forwards their applications to NAC; NAC selects one artist-in-residency of the three. The decision will be made no later than 15 April 2018. Only one artist will be invited to NAC in 2018.
